F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940) was an American novelist and short-story writer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. He is best known for his novels The Great Gatsby (1925) and Tender Is the Night (1934).
Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, to an upper-middle-class family. His father, Edward Fitzgerald, was from Maryland, and his mother, Mary McQuillan, was of Irish descent. He attended Princeton University but dropped out to join the army during World War I. After the war, he moved to New York City and wrote short stories for magazines.
In 1920, Fitzgerald published his first novel, This Side of Paradise, which was an immediate success. He married Zelda Sayre in 1920, and the couple moved to France, where Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby. The novel was a commercial failure, but is now considered one of the greatest American novels of all time.
Fitzgerald and Zelda’s marriage was troubled, and they separated in 1930. Fitzgerald moved to Hollywood to write screenplays, but he was unsuccessful and his health declined. He died in 1940 at the age of 44. His work has been widely adapted for film, television, and stage.
